Nobody asked. Veloccy found it, tested the fix, and reported the winner, all in Slack.

It started with a message nobody asked for.

54% / 38% women’s share of daily users, and of orders

With access to the data, there is nothing to ask.

Nothing had dropped. The gap had always been there, so no alert fired and no one had a question to type into a chat window. An assistant that waits to be asked never gets to this.

+9.2% women’s orders per active user, after the test

With experience of the company, it is an opening.

Veloccy knows how each group of customers moves through the app and who owns each screen. It found where women were dropping off, worked out what the gap was worth, and brought it to the person who owns growth.

How it happened in Veloccy.

A simulated fashion store with an app. We built it and planted the cause, so we know what the right answer is. These are a few moments from the work.

The arc for this work, as the team sees it: what Veloccy read, what the work led to, and the thread it happened in.

01It notices first

The work started with Veloccy, in the channel the team already uses.

It had checked the numbers before it posted, and it knew whose question this was.

Women are 54% of daily users but 38% of orders. 62% of their product views start from the Shop tab’s category list, which puts the five women’s categories at positions 8 to 12, below the fold on most phones. I have opened an arc. @Priya Nair, you own growth, so I will bring it to you.

02It works with the owners

Three people who own three things agreed in one thread.

Veloccy drafted three versions of the fix, said which it expected to win, and asked the engineer who owns the tool and the person who owns the category to review. Their conditions went onto the change.

per-audience ordering works since 4.10. one thing: the nav config is cached for 6 hours. approved from the app side ✅

fine by me as long as Sneakers stays top 5 for both lists, it’s shared and our best margin. approved ✅

approved, run all three

Applied, with Tomás’s and Hannah’s conditions on the change page. I check all four arms every morning, and if men’s numbers or AOV move more than 2% I put the list back and tell you here.

03It comes back

When the result was clear, Veloccy said so, and said what to look at next.

One version won, one tied, one was ignored. The limits held. If nothing had worked, it would have said that and put things back.

The results are in. Women’s categories first won: 31% more women open a category from the list, and women’s orders per active user are up 9.2%. Men’s numbers and AOV held. Parents show the same pattern with Kids, so I have opened that question.

yes to both. this is great 🙏

Why access to the data was not enough.

01There was no question to ask.

The gap had always been there. Finding it takes something that is looking all the time.

02It knew who owns what.

The right three people were in the thread from the first message, each asked about the part that is theirs.

03It did the work after the answer.

Versions, limits, approvals, a daily watch, and the result. An answer was the first tenth of it.

What stayed in the Brain.

Every one of these is experience the next question starts from, in every team. See the Brain
